Mwalim (M.J. Peters), an English professor, is leading the LORE Music Group
Project, an economic development model that combines artistic and
cultural programs with a component exploring Internet-based promotion
and sales of sound recordings. The objective of the program, according
to UMass, is to expand the opportunities for New Bedford area soul,
jazz and dance musicians and artists to generate income from their work
and increase exposure. This project includes a monthly program at Gallery X in New Bedford, called The LORE Lounge.
For the 2008-2009 academic year, 20 individual projects received
funding, ranging from $10,000 to $175,000, for the arts, science,
engineering, humanities and social sciences.
“Faculty scholarship and research are at the core of a world-class
university,” said UMass President Jack M. Wilson in a statement. “These
20 projects represent the breadth and depth of academic inquiry at the
University of Massachusetts.”
The LORE Lounge meets on the 4th Friday of every month at Gallery X, 169 William Street, 8:30 PM. For more info, contact LoreMusicGroup@gmail.com.
